RBA: Review of Merchant Card Payment Costs and Surcharges

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) announced major reforms on March 31, 2026, which include:

  • The end of surcharging on debit and credit cards.
  • Reduced merchant costs through lower interchange fees.
  • New interchange caps on foreign cards.
  • Increased fee transparency for small businesses.

The reduction in merchant costs and the end of consumer surcharging will take effect on October 1, 2026. The interchange cap for foreign cards will follow on April 1, 2027.

So what does this mean for Payment Logic

These changes do not directly impact Payment Logic. As we offer an opt-in service as an alternative to traditional banking payment options, our clients choose to use our platform and pay a fee for this service, not a surcharge.

Furthermore, since Payment Logic primarily processes B2B payments, the reduction in interchange fees is unlikely to affect our operations, as interchange caps for B2B transactions remain at previous levels.

The Payment Logic Proposition

Every client who pays a service fee for using our platform does so to receive the following service proposition:

  • We make every business payment more rewarding.
  • We enhance security to reduce the risk of fraud and errors.
  • We improve our clients’ cash flow by better utilising their available credit on American Express, Visa, or Mastercard business credit cards.
  • We save our clients time by seamlessly integrating with their existing accounting and banking systems.
  • We process payments as fast and effortlessly as possible.

The Payment Logic Service

At Payment Logic, we take pride in our advanced platform technology and product functionality. Our focus is on optimising payment speed and efficiency, and maintaining strict compliance with all regulatory and contractual requirements. Above all, we value our local service; our team is available to answer your calls and provide timely responses to any questions you may have.

A successful Australian Business

Our reputation is our proof.

As a humble Australian business, Payment Logic has grown rapidly through word of mouth rather than aggressive marketing. Today, we process over $7.5 billion annually in B2B payments for thousands of clients. Our growth is built on delivering exceptional service, robust features, and a highly secure and efficient platform – qualities that have also established us as a strategic partner of American Express in Australia.

Account setup takes approximately ten minutes, and most businesses can begin making payments by the next business day. If you need any assistance getting started, feel free to give us a call.
